The Town of New Castle was the first in Westchester to receive national recognition for completing the Senior Citizen Standards Assessment. The senior program functions to link older adults with a wide array of services and activities essential for maintaining health, independence and well being.

Partial Property Tax Exemption for Seniors

Town residents 65 years or older who own real estate property are entitled to a partial tax reduction
  • if they have an income of $25,000 or less
  • if they have owned the property two years or more
  • if they are residing on the property
  • The percentage of the reduction varies from 20% to 50% depending on income.
  • Veterans of World War I, World War II or Korea may apply for alternative Veterans Exemption.
  • Applications for reductions must be filed at the Tax Assessor's Office by April 30th.

Provides paid work experience on a job site with a supervisor for seniors leading to paid employment. This program is for those age 55 and over on a limited income who wish to enter or re-enter the work force.

For retired residents 60 and over, volunteer opportunities are offered in schools, day care centers, hospitals and other community non-profit agencies. Volunteer jobs are found to match your abilities and interests.

The Senior Activity Group of New Castle

Intergenerational Program
Sponsors a cottage of adolescent boys at The Hawthorne Cedar Knolls School, Hawthorne, NY. Each month, several senior citizens go to Cedar Knolls and celebrate the boys' birthdays. A present is given and refreshments, including a home-baked cake, are shared. A recreational activity is also planned. Call the Recreation Department, (914) 238-3909, for more information. Newcomers are always welcome.

Senior Citizen Recreational Services

The Town of New Castle Recreation and Park Department Program for Senior Citizens offers extensive recreation and support programs and services for persons 60 years and older. Programs are geared to meet the needs of the vitally active new retiree as well as the growing number of seniors over 85. The department publishes a monthly newsletter, Senior Times, detailing the activities. Contact the Recreation and Parks Department office to receive this newsletter.

New Castle Senior Advocacy Group
First Friday of the month. Meet in Town Hall for discussion and action on legislative issues affecting seniors.

Senior Activity Group of New Castle

All residents over 60 in the Town of New Castle are entitled and encouraged to participate in all of the senior activities. They are cordially invited to join the Senior Activity Group of New Castle which is sponsored by the New Castle Recreation Commission. For information regarding activities, contact the Recreation and Parks Department office.

Senior Support Services

The main contact person for Senior Support Services is Frances DiMase, CSW, at 238-2093.  Her office is located in the newly refurbished lower level (The Senter Street Club) of the New Castle Community Center at 10 Senter Street in downtown Chappaqua.

Local Errands and Shopping
Door-to-door transportation to local stores, e.g. grocery, pharmacy, banks and doctors appointments. Call (914) 238-8888 for more information.
Telephone Reassurance Program
Daily computerized telephone calls to those living alone.

Home Delivered Meals
Hot noontime and cold dinner meals are delivered to those over 60 for homebound or short-term convalescing. Weekend meals also available upon request.

Blood Pressure and Diabetes Screening
Provided by the Visiting Nurse Association.  Available on the first Friday of each month.

Available for the homebound

Westchester County Programs

The County Parks and Recreation Department provides all the following activities especially for senior citizens: Senior County Orchestra, Physical Exercise Training Program, Salute to Seniors, Boat Rides, Arts and Crafts training, Bocce Championship, Senior Gold Tournament, Picnics, Splash Parties, Fishing Frolic, Harvest Hop, Square Dance and more. Transportation

New Castle Recreation and Parks Commission provides wheelchair-equipped door-to-door transportation to most meetings. Call and register your name at the New Castle Community Center to reserve your space on the bus, (914) 238-8888.

Westchester County Buses and "Paratransit"

The Westchester County Department of Public Transportation will provide bus schedules for the White Plains, Ossining, Pleasantville and Katonah runs as well as a complaint center.

County residents 65 years of age or older who present a validated Westchester Senior Citizen Card are entitled to half fare on any Westchester County Transportation System bus.

The Paratransit Program provides transportation for the frail elderly and disabled. Transportation to medical services receives priority but transportation is also available for shopping and to recreation services and other destinations. For applications and further information, contact:
