11. Uses of common plants The Native Americans used many common plants for medicinal purposes. The Black-eyed Susan flower was used for intestinal worms, swelling and earaches as well as in a wash for sores. Clover grass was made into a tea for colds and coughs; it could be dried and crushed into flour or cooked as a rich source of protein. Christmas fern was used to reduce fevers, to induce vomiting, for pneumonia, and as a poultice for rheumatism. Rag weed had many purposes for the Native Americans; it was rubbed on insect bites and minor skin eruptions or hives. As a tea it was used to help treat fevers, nausea, and cramps. They also used mint for cold, coughs, diarrhea, indigestion, and headaches
