This trail was a joint effort by the New Castle Parks Department and
myself
for my Eagle
Scout Project. The trail is intended physically improve the community and to
educate the community on the previous inhabitants of the area and how the Native
Americans used the land to live, and to offer a glimpse into their culture.
The
trail is located in Gedney Park along the lake on the opposite side of the the
road. The trail is very popular amongst dog walkers and park visitors, but was
dangerous because it was uneven due to rocks and roots and sections that were
always muddy and slippery. My work included removing these roots and rocks and
leveling out and building up the ground. The next step was lining both side with
logs to contain the wood chips. Finally we put up signs and planted some native
species of plants used by the Native Americans in different ways.
