Make sure you can call when you need to!
By simply using a secondary phone line for your alarm you can prevent false alarms that occur because you couldn't contact the central station. Use your primary phone number for central station calls so that your alarm can not interfere. This can be especially beneficial if you have an actual emergency and need to call 911. If your alarm transmits over your only phone line you will not be able to use the phone while the alarm is transmitting. In a real emergency when seconds count, a 911 call directly to the police will bring help much faster than a call routed through a central station.
Please lock your house when you set your alarm.
No matter how good and well maintained an alarm system you have, there may be an occasional false alarm that will summon police because you failed to lock your doors and windows. An unexpected friend or relative or even a contractor often set off an alarm when owners are not home but left the doors unlocked. A strong gust of wind can blow open a door or activate a motion sensor.
The investigation of non-secure burglar alarms places a great strain on the police services. Two officers are required to search every room,  closet and crawlspace in your house to ensure there is not a crime occurring. Dependent on the size and layout of your house, this process can take up to 30 minutes of drawn weapons, heightened anxiety and reduced patrol coverage in the town.
